Introduzione
Fin da quando l'uomo cominciò a osservare il mondo e i suoi dintorni, ha avuto il sospetto che tra lui e le stelle vi sia un legame. Egli ha ritenuto che i loro movimenti influenzino la sua vita e, di conseguenza, pensatori di ogni cultura hanno cercato di spiegare questa relazione e di trovare un significato in esso. Questo articolo esplora il punto di vista buddhista riguardo a questa fascinazione dell'uomo con l'Universo. Il buddhismo respinge l'atteggiamento freddo nei confronti del materialismo scientifico dei fenomeni. Inoltre, esso mette in guardia contro l’asservimento totale degli ignoranti al funzionamento dei poteri esterni. E raccomanda un atteggiamento intelligente nel nostro rapporto tra noi e le stelle.
Fin dall'inizio dei tempi l'uomo è stato affascinato dagli astri ed ha sempre cercato di trovare un qualche collegamento tra questi e il proprio destino. La sua osservazione delle stelle e dei loro movimenti ha dato luogo a due settori molto importanti di studio, vale a dire Astronomia e Astrologia. L'Astronomia può essere considerata una scienza pura che si occupa della misurazione delle distanze, l'evoluzione e la distruzione delle stelle, i loro movimenti e così via. Naturalmente, tutti questi calcoli sono sempre fatti in relazione al pianeta Terra ed a come questi movimenti interplanetari influenzano  l'umanità ad un livello fisico. L'Astronomia moderna cerca di trovare le risposte alle domande ancora senza risposta riguardanti l'origine dell'uomo e la conclusiva, possibile fine della sua esistenza come membro della razza umana. E' un’affascinante area di studio, e la nostra nuova conoscenza dell'Universo e delle galassie ha messo molta pressione su molte religioni per valutare i loro postulati di vecchia data per quanto riguarda un creatore e la creazione della vita.
Il buddhismo non si contrappone ad un tale dilemma, semplicemente perché il Buddha non incoraggiò i suoi seguaci a speculare su cose che erano al di là della loro stessa comprensione. Comunque, egli fece molte allusioni che alla luce delle nostre nuove conoscenze acquisite attraverso la scienza, ci mostrano che il Buddha era assai ben consapevole della vera natura dell'Universo, che esso non è mai stato creato in un singolo momento glorioso, che la Terra è solo un minuscolo granello relativamente anche poco importante nell’intero spazio, che c'è una continua creazione e distruzione e che tutto è in costante movimento.

L’Astrologia, nondimeno, è un settore totalmente diverso di studio. Da quando l'uomo primitivo cominciò a pensare, egli fu profondamente interessato al suo rapporto con l'Universo. Quando l'uomo sviluppò il suo passaggio dalla caccia all'agricoltura, egli cominciò a notare un legame tra il movimento del sole durante l'anno e le sue stesse attività di semina, di raccolta e progetti simili. Non appena egli diventò più sofisticato, fu in grado di predire il movimento del sole e così inventò il tempo, dividendolo in anni, mesi, giorni, ore, minuti e secondi. Egli associò questa conoscenza con la sua esistenza, in cui sentiva che c'era una relazione tra il suo ciclo di vita e il movimento dei pianeti. Questo dette origine allo Zodiaco – l’apparente percorso del sole. Esso contiene dodici costellazioni. Uno studio di questi movimenti in relazione alla personale vita dell'essere umano è chiamato ‘Oroscopo’.

Lo studio dell'astrologia comporta una grande comprensione della natura umana, la capacità di valutare con precisione i movimenti planetari, insieme ad una panoramica dei fenomeni apparentemente inspiegabili dell'universo. Ci sono stati molti astrologi brillanti in passato e alcuni esistono ancora oggi. Purtroppo, vi è un numero ancora maggiore di ciarlatani che danno all'astrologia una brutta nomea. Sono occhieggianti persone che predicono eventi apparentemente veri circa il loro futuro. E fanno grandi somme di denaro sfruttando l'ignoranza e la paura degli ingenui. Come risultato, gli scienziati si fanno beffe dell’astrologia e non dipendono affatto da essa. Tuttavia il loro atteggiamento ostile non è realmente giustificabile. Lo scopo principale della lettura di un oroscopo dovrebbe essere quello di dare una una panoramica del proprio carattere, allo stesso modo come una fotografia a raggi X è in grado di dimostrare la costituzione fisica di un uomo.
Le statistiche hanno dimostrato che l'influenza del sole nel segno dello Zodiaco conta per la nascita di un’insolita persona durante certi mesi. E’ stato provato che alcuni tipi di reati hanno una corrispondenza con i segni zodiacali in cui il sole è mobile durante certi mesi dell'anno. Perciò, la comprensione di questo rapporto aiuterà l'essere umano a meditare sulla sua vita in modo più razionale, in armonia con le sue tendenze innate, in modo che vi sia un minore attrito nel modo come egli trascorre la sua vita.
Un bambino appena nato è come un seme. Esso contiene in sé tutti gli ingredienti che ne fanno un individuo simile, seppur completamente diverso da tutti gli altri esseri umani. Come il suo potenziale si sviluppa, dipende dal seme, dal tipo di formazione che riceve. La natura di un uomo è innata al suo interno, ma la sua libera volontà determina se egli farà davvero un buon uso del suo talento e abilità. Se egli andrà oltre il suo potenziale per vizio o debolezza, dipende da come si è formato in gioventù. Se noi riconosciamo la nostra natura - la nostra tendenza verso la pigrizia, l'irritabilità, le preoccupazioni, le frustrazioni, la cattiveria, la furbizia, la gelosia - siamo in grado di adottare misure positive per superarle. Il primo passo per risolvere i problemi è quello di riconoscerli per quelli che sono.
Le interpretazioni astrologiche indicano le nostre inclinazioni e tendenze. Una volta che le abbiamo rilevate, noi dobbiamo adottare le misure necessarie per tracciare la nostra vita in una maniera che ci renda utili cittadini del mondo. Perfino un individuo con tendenze criminali potrà diventare un santo, se egli riconosce la sua natura e adotta le misure per condurre una buona vita.
Un oroscopo è una mappa disegnata per illustrare la forza karmica che porta l'uomo, calcolata fin dal momento della sua nascita. La forza determina il tempo della nascita e conoscendo questo momento, un esperto astrologo può accuratamente fare un grafico del destino di un uomo all'interno di una data durata della sua vita. Tutti sanno che la Terra impiega all’incirca un anno per girare intorno al sole. Questo movimento, visto dalla terra, pone il sole in varie zone dello Zodiaco nel corso dell'anno. Quando una persona è nata (non casualmente, ma a causa dell’influenza karmica), il sole si trova a transitare in uno dei dodici segni zodiacali.
Attraverso l'oroscopo, la mappa della nostra vita, è possibile poter determinare certi momenti nella propria vita: quando è bene rallentare, oppure a volte quando ci si può spingere a livelli di grande creatività, e altri periodi in cui si deve guardare alla nostra salute e alle relative attività.
La domanda che la maggioranza delle persone si fa è se il buddhismo accetta o rifiuta l'astrologia. A rigor di termini, il Buddha non ha mai fatto alcuna dichiarazione diretta su questo argomento perché, come in molti altri casi, egli dichiarò che le discussioni su questioni come queste non appartengono allo sviluppo spirituale. Però, il buddhismo, a differenza di altre religioni, non condanna l'astrologia e le persone sono libere di utilizzare le conoscenze che possono ottenere da essa per rendere più significativa la loro vita. Tuttavia, se noi studiamo attentamente la dottrina del Buddha arriveremo ad accettare che una corretta e intelligente comprensione dell’astrologia può essere uno utile strumento, un mezzo abile. La scienza moderna è in linea con gli insegnamenti del buddhismo. Questo significa che esiste un diretto collegamento tra la vita di un singolo essere umano e il vasto funzionamento del cosmo. Sappiamo per esempio che esiste uno stretto legame tra il movimento della luna e il nostro comportamento. Questo si vede soprattutto tra le persone mentalmente disturbate e anormalmente violente. Ed è anche vero che alcune malattie come l'asma e la bronchite si aggravano quando la luna è crescente. Non vi è quindi alcuna ragione per non credere che anche altri pianeti possano influenzare la nostra vita.
I buddhisti sono convinti che vi sia una immensa energia cosmica che pulsa in tutti gli esseri viventi, comprese le piante. Questa energia interagisce con l'energia karmica che gli individui singoli generano e determina il corso che una vita avrà. La nascita di un individuo non è la prima creazione di una vita, ma la continuazione di una vita che è sempre esistita e continuerà ad esistere, fintanto che l’energia karmica individuale non si placa attraverso la liberazione definitiva nello Stato Incondizionato. Ora, perché  una vita possa manifestarsi in una nuova esistenza, devono essere soddisfatti alcuni fattori, e cioè le stagioni, l’ordine germinale e la natura. Questi sono supportati dalla energia mentale e dall’energia karmica e tutti questi elementi si trovano in costante interazione e sono interdipendenti tra loro, comportando una continua variazione per la vita di un essere umano.
Secondo gli astrologi, il momento in cui una persona è nata, è predeterminato dalla energia cosmica e dall'energia karmica. Quindi, si può concludere che la vita non è puramente accidentale, ma è il risultato dell'interazione tra il karma di un individuo e la forza dell'energia universale. Ed anche il corso di una vita umana è predeterminato, in parte dalle azioni proprie di un essere causate in passato, ed inoltre dalle energie che rendono attivo il cosmo. Una volta avviata, una vita è controllata dalla interazione tra queste due forze, anche per il momento preciso in cui una nascita avviene. Un esperto astrologo, quindi, essendo uno che comprende l’influenza cosmica come pure quella karmica, può tracciare la rotta della propria e altrui vita, sulla base del momento della nascita della persona.
Mentre noi, in un certo senso, siamo in balia di queste forze, il Buddha indicò una Via, un modo attraverso il quale possiamo sfuggire alle loro influenze. Tutte le energie karmiche positive e negative sono memorizzate nella mente subconscia, - descritte normalmente come purezze o impurità mentali. Dal momento che le forze karmiche influenzano il nostro destino, una persona può sviluppare la sua mente e così impedire quel tipo di influenze malefiche causate dal precedente karma negativo. Una persona può anche "purificare" la sua mente e liberarsi di tutte le energie karmiche e, quindi, perfino prevenire la rinascita. E quando non c'è più rinascita, non ci sarà più una vita potenziale e di conseguenza non ci sarà più alcuna esistenza "futura", che possa esser predetta o tracciata. Quando si sarà giunti a questo stadio dello sviluppo spirituale e mentale, avremo trasceso il bisogno di conoscere tutto sulla nostra propria vita, perché la maggior parte delle imperfezioni e dell’insoddisfazione sarà stata rimossa. Un essere umano altamente sviluppato non avrà più bisogno di un oroscopo.
Dall'inizio del 20° secolo, psicologi e psichiatri sono arrivati alla conclusione che nella mente umana c'è molto di più di ciò che lo zoccolo duro dei materialisti erano pronti ad accettare. Vi è molto di più in questo mondo di ciò che può essere visto e toccato. Il famoso psicologo Svizzero Carl Jung, era abituato a fare gli oroscopi dei suoi pazienti. Una volta, che aveva fatto una analisi astrologica di circa 500 coppie sposate, scoprì che i risultati degli studi di Tolomeo, su cui si basa la moderna astrologia occidentale, erano ancora validi, che gli aspetti favorevoli tra il sole e la luna dei diversi partners aveva prodotto matrimoni felici.
Il noto psicologo Francese, Michel Gauguelin, che in origine aveva una visione negativa dell’astrologia, fece un sondaggio su circa 20.000 analisi oroscopiche e con sua grande sorpresa trovò che le caratteristiche delle persone studiate coincidevano con il tipo di caratterizzazione prodotta dai moderni metodi psicologici.
La messa a dimora di alcuni alberi e piante, nei vari momenti dell’anno, produrrà delle differenze nella forza o nell'aspetto delle piante. Quindi, non c'è motivo di dubitare che le persone nate in certi periodi dell'anno, avranno caratteristiche diverse da persone nate in altri periodi. Conoscendo le sue debolezze, i suoi difetti e le carenze, un uomo potrà fare del suo meglio per superarli, e per poter essere una persona migliore e più utile alla società. E gli sarà anche di grande aiuto per sbarazzarsi della infelicità e delle delusioni. Allontanarsi dal luogo dove una persona è nata, potrà aiutare ad evitare l'influenza che le stelle avevano avuto al momento della sua nascita.
Shakespeare disse: "La colpa non sta nelle nostre stelle, ma in noi stessi dato che vi siamo subalterni". Un noto astrologo, in passato ha detto: "Le stelle spingono, ma non costringono". San Tommaso d'Aquino affermò: "I pianeti influenzano la parte più elementare dell'uomo che non le passioni"…, ma l'uomo, attraverso il suo intelletto, può organizzare la sua vita ad essere in armonia con i pianeti, ed anche coltivare il suo talento intrinseco e manipolarlo per il suo miglioramento.
Ma l'astrologia non può automaticamente risolvere tutti i nostri problemi. Dobbiamo farlo noi stessi. Proprio come un medico che può scoprire la natura della malattia, un astrologo può visualizzare solo alcuni aspetti del nostro carattere e della nostra vita. Dopodiché lo si lascia tentare di modificare il nostro modo di vivere. Naturalmente, il compito sarà reso più facile, sapendo con che cosa si ha a che fare. Alcune persone sono troppo dipendenti dall’astrologia. Esse corrono subito da un astrologo ogni volta che succede qualcosa, o anche se fanno un determinato sogno. Ricordatevi che oggi l'astrologia è ancora una scienza imperfetta e che anche i migliori astrologi possono commettere gravi errori. Utilizzate l'astrologia in modo intelligente, proprio come si utilizzerebbe un qualsiasi strumento che possa rendere la vita più confortevole e più gradevole. Soprattutto, fate attenzione ai falsi astrologi che sono lì per ingannarvi non dicendo la verità, ma solo ciò che voi desiderate sentire.
Non aspettatevi che la fortuna venga da voi o che si consegni a voi con facilità, senza alcun sforzo da parte vostra. Se volete fare un buon raccolto, dovrete prima fare una buona semina e il seme dovrà essere quello giusto. Ricordatevi, "L’opportunità può bussare alla vostra porta, ma non romperà mai la serratura per avere l'accesso".

 BUDDHISM AND ASTROLOGY --(By Late Ven. Dr K Sri Dhammananda)

 Introduction

Ever since man began to observe the world and its surroundings, he has suspected that there is a link between himself and the stars. He has felt that their movements influence his life and as a result thinkers from every culture have tried to explain this relationship and find some meaning in it. This article explores the Buddhist point of view regarding this fascination of man with the Universe. Buddhism rejects the cold scientific attitude of materialism towards phenomena. It also warns the ignorant against total enslavement to the workings of the external powers. It advocates an intelligent attitude towards our relationship between ourselves and the stars.

 Buddhism and Astrology

From the very beginning of time man has been fascinated by the stars and he has always tried to find some links between them and his own destiny. His observation of the stars and their movemenst gave rise to two very important areas of study, namely Astronomy and Astrology. Astronomy can be considered a pure science which is concerned with the measurement of distances, the evolution and destruction of stars, their movements and so on. Of course all these calculations are always made in relation to planet earth and how these interplanetary movements affect mankind on a physical level. Modern astronomy seeks to find answers to the still unanswered questions regarding the origin of man and the final, possible end of his existence as a member of the human race. It is fascinating area of study and our new knowledge of the Universe and the galaxies has put much pressure on many religions to evaluate their old-age postulations regarding a creator and the creation of life.

Buddhism does not face any such dilemma, simply because the Buddha did not encourage his followers to speculate on things which were beyond their comprehension. However he has made many allusions which in the light of our new knowledge gained through science, shows us that the Buddha was very much aware of the true nature of the Universe, that it was never created in one glorious moment, that the earth is merely a tiny even relatively unimportant speck in all space, that there is a constant creation and destruction and that everything is in constant motion.Astrology, however is a completely different area of study altogether. Ever since early man began to think, he was deeply concerned about his relationship with the universe. When man developed from hunting to agriculture, he began to notice a link between the movement of the sun through the year and his own activities of planting, harvesting and similar projects. As he became more sophisticated he was able to predict the movement of the sun and he invented time, dividing it into years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds.He associated this knowledge with his existence whereby he felt that there was a relationship between his own life cycle and the movement of the planets. This gave rise to the Zodiacs - the apparent path of the sun. It contains twelve constellations. A study of these movements in relation to the human being’s personal life is called a horoscope.

The study of astrology involves a great understanding of human nature, an ability to assess planetary movements precisely, together with an insight into the seemingly unexplainable phenomena in the universe. There have been many brilliant astrologers in the past and some exist even today. Unfortunately there are an even larger number of charlatans who give astrology a bad name. They hood-wink people by predicting seemingly true events about their future. They make large sums of money by exploiting the ignorance and fear of the gullible. As a result scientists scoffed at astrology and did not depend on it. However their hostile attitude is not really justifiable. The main purpose of reading a horoscope should be to give one an insight into one’s own character, in the same way that an x-ray photograph can show the physical make-up of a man.

Statistics have shown that the influence of the sun in the signs of the Zodiac accounts for the birth of unusual people during certain months. Certain crimes have been found to correspond with Zodiac signs in which the sun is moving during certain months of the year.

Thus an understanding of this relationship will help a man to plot his life more meaningfully in harmony with his innate tendencies, so that there is less friction as he goes through life.

A new born baby is like a seed. It contains within itself all the ingredients which will make him a similar, yet completely different individual from all fellow human beings. How his potential is developed depends like the seed, on the kind of training he receives. The nature of a man born within him, but his own freewill determines whether he will make really good use of his talents and abilities. Whether he will overcome his potential for vice or weakness depends on how he is trained in his youth. If we recognize our nature – our tendency towards laziness, irritability, worries, frustrations, wickedness, cunningness, jealousy – we can take positive steps to overcome them. The first step in solving problems is to recognize them for what they are.

Astrological interpretations indicate our inclinations and tendencies. Once pointed out we must take the necessary steps to chart our lives in a manner that will make us useful citizens of the world. Even a person with criminal tendencies can become a saint. If he recognizes his nature and take steps to lead a good life.

A horoscope is a map drawn to shown the karmic force man carries, calculated from the time of his birth. The force determines the time of birth and knowing this time, a skilful astrologer can accurately chart a man’s destiny within a given life-span.

 Everybody knows that the earth takes approximately one year to move around the sun. This movement, viewed from the earth, places the sun in various zodiacal areas during year. A person is born (not accidentally but as a result of karmic influence) when the sun is in transit in one of the twelve Zodiacal signs.

Through the horoscope, the map of your life, you can determine certain times in your life when you have to slow down, certain times when you can push yourself to great levels of creativity, and certain period when you have to watch your health and related activities.

 The question most people ask is whether Buddhism accepts or rejects astrology. Strictly speaking, the Buddha did not make any direct pronouncement on this subject because as in many other cases, he stated that discussions on matters such as these do not pertain to spiritual development. Buddhism, unlike some other religions, does not condemn astrology and people are free to use the knowledge they can get from it to make their lives more meaningful. However, if we study the Buddha’s teaching carefully we will come to accept that a proper and intelligent understanding of astrology can be a useful tool. Modern science is in accordance with the teachings of Buddhism. This means that there is a direct link between the life of an individual human being and the vast workings of the cosmos. We know for example that there is a close link between the movement of the moon and our behavior. This is seen especially among mentally disturbed and abnormally violent people. It is also true that certain sicknesses like asthma and bronchitis are aggravated when the moon waxes. There is therefore no reason for us not to believe that other planets can also influence our lives.

Buddhists accepts that there is an immense cosmic energy which pulsates through every living thing, including plants. This energy interacts with the karmic energy which individual generates and determines the course that a life will take. The birth of an individual is not the first creation of a life but the continuation of one that always existed and will continue to exist so long as the karmic energy is not quelled through final liberation in the unconditioned state. Now, for a life to manifest itself in a new existence, certain factors, namely seasons, germinal order and nature must be fulfilled. These are supported by mental energy and karmic energy and all these elements are in constant interaction and interdependent with each other resulting in constant changes to a human being’s life.

According to astrologers the time at which a person is born is predetermined by the cosmic energy and the karmic energy. Hence, it can be concluded that life is not merely accidental; it is the result of the interaction between an individual’s karma and the universal energy force. The course of a human life is predetermined, cause partly by a being’s own actions in the past and the energies that activate the cosmos. Once started, a life is controlled by the interaction between these two forces even to the moment at which a birth takes place. A skilful astrologer then, as one who understands cosmic as well as karmic influence, can chart the course of one’s life, based on the moment of the person’s birth.

While we are in one sense at the mercy of these forces, the Buddha has pointed out a way through which we can escape its influence. All karmic energies are stored in the subconscious mind-normally described as mental purities and impurities. Since karmic forces influence one’s destiny, a person can develop his mind and negate certain evil influences caused by previous bad kamma. A person can also “purify” his mind and rid himself of all karmic energies and thus prevent rebirth. When there is no rebirth, there is no potential life and there will consequently be no “future” existence which can be predicted or charted. At such stage of spiritual and mental development, one will have transcended the need to know about his life because most imperfections and unsatisfactoriness would have been removed. A highly developed human being will have no need of a horoscope.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, psychologist and psychiatrists have come to recognize that there is much more to the human mind than the hard core materialists have been ready to accept. There is more to the world that can be seen and touched. The famous Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung, used to cast the horoscopes of his patients. On one occasion when he made an astrological analysis of about 500 marriages, he discovered that the findings of Ptolemy, on which modern western astrology is based, were still valid, that favourable aspects between the sun and the moon of the different partners did produce happy marriages.

 The well-known French psychologist, Michel Gauguelin, who originally held a negative view of astrology, made a survey of about 20,000 horoscopical analyses and found to his surprise that the characteristics of the persons studied coincided with characterization produced by modern psychological methods.

 The planting of certain tree and vegetables at different times of a year will produce differences in strength or appearance of the plants. So there is no reason to doubt that people born in certain times of the year will have different characteristics from people born at other times. By knowing his weakness, failures and short-comings, a man can do his best to overcome them and make himself a better and more useful person to the society. It will also help himself a great deal to get rid of unhappiness and disappointments. Going away from the country where a person is born, can help one avoid the influence of the stars.

Shakespeare says: “ The fault is not our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings”. A well known astrologer had said: “ The stars impel; they do not compel”. St. Thomas Aquinas says: “ The planets influence the more elemental part of man than passions”, but through his intellect man can arrange his life in harmony with the planets, and also cultivate his inherent talents and manipulate them for his betterment.

But astrology cannot automatically solve all your problems. You must do that yourself. Just like a doctor who can discover the nature of disease, an astrologer can only show certain aspects of your life and character. After that it is left to you adjust your way of life. Of course, the task will be made easier, knowing what it is you are up against. Some people are too dependent on astrology. They run to the astrologer everytime something happens or even if they have a dream. Remember, even today astrology is very much an imperfect science and even the best astrologers can make serious mistakes. Use astrology intelligently, just as you would use any tool which would make your life more comfortable and more enjoyable. Above all beware of fake astrologers who are out to cheat you by telling you not the truth, but what you want to hear.

Do not expect good luck to come to you or be handed to you easily without any effort on your part. If you want to reap the harvest, you must sow the seed and it must be the rightseed. Remember, “Opportunity knocks at the door, but never break the lock to gain entrance”.
